Camshaft Drive Belts

Many modern vehicle engines are fitted with a camshaft drive belt. These belts need to be replaced at regular intervals and these are set by the vehicle manufacturer, usually anything from 30,000 to 100,000 miles between 3 and 6 years.

Sometimes these belts can break. To avoid this the best course of action is to abide by the manufacturer’s replacement intervals. It is possible for a belt to fall suddenly without any warning and this can cause serious internal damage to the engine. Repairs can prove to be very expensive and leave you without your vehicle for some time.

We can assist you to identify if your vehicle has one of these belts from our technical information.

We can also give you an estimated cost to replace the belt, which could be 10% to 15% of the repair cost following a belt failure. Usually a camshaft drive belt kit is fitted, which includes tensioners and also the water pump (anti-freeze coolant) on some vehicles.

If you are in doubt about the condition of the belt, or its service history RENEW IT.

As part of the repairs that Drive in Automotive undertake on your vehicle. If your belt has been disturbed, we will not re-use it but will replace it for safety reasons.
